Ok. First...Christoforo Columbo
There are several videos which provide a lot of food for thought on the topic of Christopher Columbus and his reputation as a hero of history.  Columbus is the hero people love to hate, and the accidental winner of a a time period full of people with the potential to make quite similar discoveries.  There were tons of Conquistadors who were worse human beings than Columbus, and plenty who deserve far more credit than he does.  
The historiographical reputation of Columbus has waxed and waned over the centuries.  Recently it has become more popular to hate on Columbus as if he were the biggest baddie in history.  Below are some links to popular youtube videos that might help you to get a sense of the critiques and perspectives most common these days.
